Supporting Hair Health in Aging Women: Hair Loss & Actinic Keratosis in an 86-Year-Old Female | Katy & Houston, TX
Provider: Reena Jogi MD – Hair Loss & Skin Specialist | Houston & Katy, Texas
Hair loss in elderly women is often overlooked—but it’s a common concern that affects quality of life and self-esteem. At our dermatology clinic in Katy and Houston, we recently evaluated an 86-year-old woman with chronic, progressive hair thinning that had recently worsened after a COVID-19 infection.
Background & Previous Treatments
This well-informed, proactive patient had already tried several hair loss products prior to her visit:
Topical minoxidil, which caused scalp sensitivity
Viviscal and Nutrafol supplements
Hair care adjustments, including avoiding harsh chemicals
She had watched Dr. Reena Jogi’s educational video on hair loss and was interested in learning more about non-invasive treatment options appropriate for her age.
Scalp Examination & Diagnosis
A full exam revealed diffuse thinning consistent with androgenetic alopecia (AGA)—a genetically driven condition that becomes more common with age. The patient denied significant itching or burning, and had no signs of scarring alopecia.
She also noted that her hair thinned significantly after recovering from COVID—a common post-viral trigger for hair shedding, particularly in older patients.
Diagnosis:
Androgenetic Alopecia (Female Pattern Hair Loss)
Actinic Keratosis (precancerous lesion) on the scalp
Treatment Plan: Gentle, Supplement-Based Approach
Given her history of scalp sensitivity and her desire to avoid injections or prescriptions, we recommended a gentle but proactive regimen:
✅ For Hair Loss:
Xtress Hair Growth Gummies – A physician-recommended nutraceutical with biotin and adaptogens
CeraVe and Seen Shampoo + Conditioner – Fragrance-free, hydrating formulas to reduce irritation
Minoxidil (oral) was discussed, but she preferred to defer until after PCP clearance
PRP and AlmaTED were declined due to realistic expectations regarding outcomes
She was reassured that hair dyeing was safe and not a contributor to her hair loss. Baseline photos were taken, and she will return in 6 months to monitor results.
✅ For Actinic Keratosis:
Cryotherapy with Liquid Nitrogen – One pre-cancerous lesion on the left superior parietal scalp was treated in-office
Sunscreen Counseling – SPF 30+ daily use was recommended to prevent future sun-induced lesions
Patient Outlook
This 86-year-old woman is now on a low-risk, non-invasive treatment plan designed for her unique needs as an older adult. By focusing on scalp-friendly hair care, nutritional support, and routine skin cancer prevention, Dr. Jogi aims to help her preserve her hair and scalp health well into her 80s and beyond.
