Many men begin using Rogaine (topical minoxidil) expecting quick improvements in hair growth. However, treating male pattern hair loss requires patience and consistency.
A 34-year-old man recently visited our dermatology clinic after experiencing gradual scalp thinning for two years. He had been using Rogaine for approximately two months without noticeable improvement. With a family history of hair loss affecting his maternal uncle, he wanted to explore additional treatment options.
Diagnosing Male Pattern Hair Loss
After a comprehensive scalp examination, his hair loss was most consistent with androgenetic alopecia (AGA), also known as male pattern baldness.
This genetic condition causes progressive hair follicle miniaturization, commonly affecting the hairline, temples, and crown.
Although the patient had not noticed improvement after two months of Rogaine, this did not necessarily mean treatment was unsuccessful. Topical minoxidil generally requires three to six months of consistent use before noticeable results may develop.
Exploring Stronger Hair Loss Treatments
Several treatment options were discussed, including:
Topical and oral minoxidil
Finasteride and dutasteride
PRP hair restoration
Alma TED hair restoration
Low-level laser therapy
Hair growth supplements such as Nutrafol and Xtresse
The patient decided to continue topical minoxidil while considering additional treatment options.
A prescription was also provided for a compounded topical formula containing minoxidil 7%, finasteride 0.25%, and tretinoin 0.0125%, to be applied to the scalp as directed.
He planned to reassess his treatment response over the following six months and potentially explore Alma TED in the future.
Can Minoxidil Cause More Hair Shedding Initially?
Yes. Some patients experience temporary increased shedding during the first few weeks of minoxidil treatment as hair follicles transition through their growth cycles.
This shedding does not necessarily indicate that treatment is failing. Consistent use and appropriate follow-up are important when evaluating progress.
